Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter cut into small pieces
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Cut the cold butter into the flour mixture until coarse crumbs form.
  4. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, heavy cream, and vanilla extract.
  6. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and gently stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  7. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and gently shape it into a round disk about 1 inch thick.
  8. Cut the dough into 8 wedges.
  9. Arrange the wedges on the prepared baking sheet. If desired, brush the tops lightly with cream.
  10. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until lightly golden.
  11. Cool for several minutes before serving.
  12. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Keep the butter cold for the best texture.
  • Avoid overmixing the dough.
  • Add a little extra cream only if the dough is too dry to come together.
  • For a richer chocolate flavor, use dark chocolate chips.
  • Store cooled scones in an airtight container for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
