Chocolate Croissants Recipe

Making chocolate croissants at home may sound complicated, but using store-bought puff pastry makes the process much easier. You can create beautifully flaky pastries with a crisp exterior and warm, melty chocolate filling without spending hours making laminated dough from scratch.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry thawed
  • 4 ounces chocolate cut into small pieces or chocolate sticks
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Powdered sugar for serving, optional

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Unfold the chilled puff pastry on a lightly floured surface.
  3. Cut the pastry into 8 triangles.
  4. Place a piece of chocolate near the wide end of each triangle.
  5. Roll each triangle from the wide end toward the pointed tip.
  6. Place the croissants on the prepared baking sheet with the tip tucked underneath.
  7. Whisk together the egg and water, then lightly brush the tops of the croissants with the egg wash.
  8. Refrigerate the assembled croissants for 15–20 minutes.
  9. Bake until puffed and golden brown, about 15–20 minutes, depending on size and oven.
  10. Cool for several minutes before serving.
  11. Dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve warm.

Notes

For the best results, keep your puff pastry chilled and work fairly quickly. If your kitchen is warm, return the pastry to the refrigerator whenever it starts becoming soft.
You can also prepare a batch of assembled croissants ahead of time and refrigerate them until you are ready to bake. This makes the recipe especially convenient for weekend breakfasts and brunch gatherings.
The finished croissants are best enjoyed fresh from the oven when the pastry is crisp and flaky and the chocolate filling is warm and melted.
